Reflections on EU Hydrogen Week 2024: A Convergence of Minds in Brussels
November 27th, 2024
Last week, we had the privilege of joining stakeholders from across Europe in Brussels for the EU Hydrogen Week 2024—a pivotal event that's shaping the future of the hydrogen economy. The energy and enthusiasm were palpable as industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers came together to discuss the rapid advancements and collaborative efforts in this exciting field.
Finland at the Forefront
Our Finland Pavilion was a hive of activity and innovation throughout the week. It was inspiring to see so many people eager to learn about Finland's leading role in the hydrogen economy. Representatives from the University of Oulu and the JustH2Transit project, including Professor Marko Huttula and Dr. Filipp Temerov, were on hand to share insights and engage with visitors.
We hosted a series of presentations that highlighted the strides Finland is making:
-
Hydrogen and Electricity Markets and Their Synergies: Gasgrid and LUT University delved into how hydrogen can be integrated into existing energy markets, exploring potential synergies that could be harnessed.
-
Why is Finland the Leading Hydrogen Economy in Europe?: The Hydrogen Cluster Finland provided an in-depth look into the strategic initiatives and innovations propelling Finland to the forefront of hydrogen development.
-
Finland as an Investment Destination: P2X and Alpiq discussed investment opportunities, emphasizing Finland's conducive environment for hydrogen-related ventures.
-
Hydrogen Valley Projects: CLIC Innovation showcased ongoing projects that exemplify practical applications and regional benefits of hydrogen technologies.
-
Hydrogen Research, Development, and Innovation Activities in Finland: Hydrogen Research Forum Finland and Business Finland shared the latest research initiatives and the collaborative efforts driving innovation in the sector.

Engagement at the European Parliament
One of the significant highlights for us was the meeting at the European Parliament focused on "Hydrogen in the Baltic Sea Region: The Baltic Sea Region at the Forefront of Innovation". It was an excellent platform for discussing regional strategies and how we can collaborate to advance hydrogen technologies.
We were particularly proud when Matti Malkamäki, Founder and Chairman of Hycamite, participated in a panel discussion titled "Success Stories from the Baltic Sea Region". Hearing him share the remarkable journey of Hycamite — a company leveraging research from the University of Oulu—was inspiring. It exemplifies how academic research can be successfully translated into practical, impactful industry solutions.

A Collective Vision for the Future
EU Hydrogen Week 2024 was more than just presentations and meetings; it was a convergence of minds committed to a sustainable energy future. The event facilitated connections between researchers, industry experts, and policymakers, all unified by the goal of accelerating the adoption of hydrogen as a key energy vector.
The active participation of entities like the University of Oulu and the JustH2Transit project highlighted the importance of collaboration in this sector. By sharing knowledge and fostering partnerships, we're confident that we can collectively overcome challenges and unlock the full potential of hydrogen technologies.
Looking Ahead
As we reflect on the insights and connections gained during the EU Hydrogen Week, it's clear that the momentum behind the hydrogen economy is stronger than ever. The discussions and collaborations initiated here will undoubtedly contribute to significant advancements in the coming years.
We invite all stakeholders to continue this journey with us, leveraging our collective expertise to drive innovation and sustainable growth in the hydrogen sector.
